Helpful Links and How to Make a Bookmark File Public and Save it in the Archives

So here’s the situation I ran into. I have hundreds and hundreds of bookmarks saved and unorganized and I need to make them available easily for sharing. The problem is its not as easy as it sounds. Theres only a few suggestions when you do a keyword search on how to share bookmark files, each site parrots the other, none of which are really helpful, at least for me. So I found my own way and wanted to share in case you have this problem one day.

The answer is shit-simple.

1. Open a free wordpress site, I guess any of the free website providers will work but I only have used WordPress.

2. Go into the bookmarks page, the page, not the dropdown menu. The 3 dots in the top right corner have an ‘export’ option. Export all bookmarks to the computer itself.

The file will save as an HTML file, which you cannot upload directly to a website

3. Open the file. The file will open with the title of the article, not the .com links but once you highlight and copy all the links at one time they will paste as a single mass of direct links with no identifying script unless it was originally titled as such.

Simply highlight and copy the links you want to make public and go to your free webpage and paste. This will transfer a list of active links you can annotate and now the bookmark list will have a direct link all by itself which you can share just like any ordinary link.

Out of all the methods featured on the bullshit tech sites this is the only one I could get to work, it took me half a Saturday to figure out how to make my list available for everyone. Now you know how.

The best part is, as you may have run into your fair share of broken ‘404’ links you know how frustrating it is. Especially these days when access to information is getting restricted more and more all the time. I have had multiple instances where a link was embedded in an article one day and then the next day it was busted.

The website provider notifies me what links are taken and I always follow up to see exactly what ones are read, not only is this just good practice but it keeps my sources up to date by letting me know when one goes 404. When this happens I’ll go to the wayback machine and try to find another copy and swap them out.

When you upload your new free webpage and bookmark list onto Wayback Machine one of the features is it also catalogs all the links embedded in your site. This means whatever link you share will always be available in the archives. So all these hundreds and hundreds of obscure uncommon links will available for future researchers.

Ta-Da

(Now you have the pleasantry of sorting through this tangled mess and trying to organize and label them, which I have no intention of ever doing but this is my contribution to keep information available.)
